Austrian Airlines places high importance on digital accessibility for people with disabilities. We are committed to providing an inclusive online experience for all users, in full compliance with the European Accessibility Act (Directive (EU) 2019/882) and all relevant accessibility standards. These include EN 301 549 and the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) 2.1, Level AA, as well as the Accessibility Act (BaFG). We strive to ensure that our website is accessible in accordance with the current version of the Accessibility Act implementing the European Accessibility Directive (Directive 2019/882) on the accessibility requirements for products and services.
Scope of this Statement
This Accessibility Statement applies to the services under the BaFG provided by Austrian Airlines on the website www.austrian.com. It was created on June 24, 2025, and will be reviewed and updated as necessary.
Description of the Service according to § 14 (2) and Annex 3 to the BaFG
Austrian Airlines is a globally operating airline. Under the BaFG, its service is defined as providing consumers with the ability to book flights and travel-related services, obtain travel information, manage customer data, and access additional services such as seat selection, baggage options, or check-in through electronic communication channels—particularly websites and mobile applications.
The Lufthansa Group provides these services for several airlines, including Lufthansa Airlines, SWISS, Austrian Airlines, Brussels Airlines, Eurowings, and Discover Airlines. These airlines serve numerous international destinations for both scheduled and leisure travel.
Detailed information about the respective flight offers and services can be found on the Lufthansa Group websites, such as www.austrian.com, where you can also find explanations of the services offered.
Descriptions and Explanations Necessary to Understand the Service Delivery
Before booking a flight via our websites or mobile applications, consumers can first obtain information on flight connections, fare options, and additional services. After selecting the desired connection and entering travel details, a personalized flight offer is displayed. This includes the total price, available baggage options, and additional services such as seat reservations or rebooking options.
The booking is finalized by clicking the “Book Now” button. Consumers then receive a booking confirmation via email and gain access to their travel data via their customer account or the app.
Detailed information on travel procedures, baggage policies, check-in processes, and other services can be found on our website at www.austrian.com. Initial content in plain language is also available there. Further accessible offerings—for people with limited mobility or sensory impairments—are also described there.
Measures Supporting Accessibility
To ensure compliance with the requirements of the BaFG and related accessibility standards, Lufthansa continuously implements the following measures:
- Audits: We regularly conduct both automated and manual accessibility audits to systematically evaluate our digital offerings for compliance with WCAG 2.1 Level AA and EN 301 549. These checks help us identify and remove potential barriers.
- Training: We provide ongoing and comprehensive training for our content creators, designers, and developers to ensure familiarity with accessibility best practices, and that these principles are considered at every stage of content creation and development.
- Integration into the Development Cycle: Accessibility is integrated into our software development lifecycle. From design and planning to testing and deployment, a “Born Accessible” approach is pursued wherever possible.
- Specialized Accessibility Team: We have a dedicated team responsible for overseeing and promoting digital accessibility initiatives across our digital platforms.
Conformance Status
Based on our most recent evaluations, the website www.austrian.com is partially compliant with the requirements of the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) 2.1 Level AA and the European standard EN 301 549, as referenced in the Accessibility Act (BaFG). This means that significant portions of the website already meet the applicable digital accessibility requirements; however, improvements are still needed in some areas to achieve full compliance. We are actively working to eliminate these remaining barriers.
Accessibility Review and Evaluation
As part of our ongoing compliance process, the website www.austrian.com has been thoroughly evaluated by our accessibility experts based on the four principles of digital accessibility (POUR):
- Perceivable: Verification of alternative text for non-text content, provision of text alternatives for multimedia content (e.g., captions, transcripts), compliance with sufficient color contrast for readability, and adaptable layouts without information or structure loss.
- Operable: Analysis of keyboard accessibility to ensure that all interactive elements are fully usable via keyboard, effective focus management for assistive technology users, and appropriate control of time-based content.
- Understandable: Review of clear and descriptive page titles, logically structured heading hierarchies for easy navigation, consistent navigation mechanisms, and effective input assistance to help users avoid and correct errors.
- Robust: Ensuring compatibility with a wide range of assistive technologies (e.g., screen readers, magnification software) and adherence to semantic HTML structures to support reliable machine interpretation of content.
In addition to our internal processes, our website has been reviewed by external accessibility experts. We also regularly test our websites for barriers in collaboration with people with disabilities.
Identified Accessibility Issues
Despite significant efforts to make the website accessible, we have identified that the following content and features may not yet be fully accessible. We are actively working to resolve these issues:
- Missing Alternative Text: Some images lack appropriate text alternatives. We are currently reviewing and updating these image descriptions.
- Inadequate Heading Hierarchy: Headings may sometimes be skipped or illogically arranged. We are working on a consistent, semantic heading structure.
- Non-descriptive Links: Links such as “Click here” or “More” are vague. We are replacing them with descriptive link texts.
- Complex Forms and Interactive Elements: Some forms or interactive elements may be difficult to use with keyboard or screen readers. We are optimizing them for better accessibility.
- Third-party Content: Embedded third-party tools may not fully meet our accessibility standards. We strive to provide accessible alternatives whenever possible.
- PDF Documents: Some PDF files may not be fully accessible. We are reviewing and replacing or appropriately labeling them as needed.
- Videos without Captions: Not all videos include captions or transcripts. We are working to add captions to improve comprehension.
- Session Timeouts: For security reasons, session timeouts cannot always be extended. We aim to balance usability with security.
A comprehensive plan to resolve the identified issues has been initiated to ensure timely resolution. Accessibility improvements will be gradually rolled out across the platform once they are completed and thoroughly tested.
