3D Secure is the technical name of the security standards for online purchases with credit or debit card. At Mastercard, it is called Mastercard Identity Check, at Visa “Visa Secure”, at American Express “Safekey”, “J/Secure” at JCB and “ProtectBuy” at Diners and Discover.
Austrian Airlines adheres to the new statutory provisions and ensures all its own payment processes comply with the Strong Customer Authentication rules. Strong Customer Authentication is a requirement of the Revised Payment Service Directive (PSDII) for payment providers in the European Economic Area (EEA) and/or credit and debit cards issued in the EEA. Online payments must be confirmed by at least two of the following three elements:

Something only you know
- Password
- Pass phrase
- PIN
- Sequences
- Personal question

Something you have
- Mobile phone
- Smartwatches
- Chip card
- Token
- ID

Biometric feature
- Fingerprint
- Facial features
- Voice pattern
- Eye characteristics
- DNA signature
The requirements of the Payment Service Directive increase the security of electronic payments.
For example, your transactions are protected by a personal password or transaction number (mTAN), which is sent to your mobile phone via SMS (identification procedures may vary depending on the bank). This gives you peace of mind when making online purchases. You may also be asked to answer a security question. The security question and your answer are determined when registering your card at your bank. The security question is often asked in a separate pop-up window. Ensure that your browser pop-up blocker is disabled.
If a 3D Secure authentication is necessary for your online transaction, an input window opens after the card data has been entered, in which you are asked for your password or mTAN and/or you are asked the security question associated with the card. If all your answers are correct, the bank confirms that you are the authorised cardholder and the payment process can continue.
Upon the first payment with the 3D Secure system, you are prompted to register for 3D Secure after entering your credit or debit card data. A dialogue box of the card-issuing bank opens and you can complete your registration.
For more information on 3D Secure, please visit your bank website.
