Find out which items are allowed in the hand luggage, how large and heavy your hand luggage may be and how many items you can take with you. Compliance with these provisions will allow you to board smoothly and enjoy more comfort inside the aircraft.
Hand luggage per travel class
You can take one or two items of hand luggage on board depending on the travel class booked.
|Economy Class||Premium Economy Class||Business class¹|
|Number||One item of hand luggage||One item of hand luggage||Two items of hand luggage|
|Weight||max. 8 kg||max. 8 kg||max. 8 kg|
|Size||max. 55 x 40 x 23 cm||max. 55 x 40 x 23 cm||max. 55 x 40 x 23 cm|
1 = Hand luggage may also be restricted to one item for our Business Class passengers in exceptional cases, depending on the aircraft type and/or safety requirements of the national authorities.
The weight and size of your hand luggage are checked at the airport and it will be checked in if necessary. Additional charges are incurred if you exceed your free baggage allowance. Please note that these fees are higher than the regular check-in.
Alternatively, you can also carry a folding garment bag measuring 57 x 54 x 15 cm instead of hand luggage.
Please note that on some flights your hand luggage bag must be stowed in the cargo hold due to the aircraft type.
In addition to your item of hand luggage, you may also take one additional personal item with a maximum size of 40 x 30 x 10 cm into the cabin with you. This might be a handbag, a travel pouch or a laptop bag, for example.
We recommend storing your personal documents, medication and valuables here in case your hand luggage has to be carried in the cargo hold.
Carrycots / Child’s seats
For children under two years, you may also carry a carrycot, a child’s seat or a foldable pram weighing a maximum of 10 kg.
You may take a "pocket buggy" with you on board as part of your permitted hand luggage providing it is packed accordingly and is no longer identifiable as a pram.
How to store your hand luggage correctly
For a comfortable trip and more space in the cabin, stow your hand luggage in the compartment above you. You can place personal items under your front seat. There is a garment hook on the front seat for your jacket. Please note that baggage storage above the emergency exit row seats is reserved for the passengers sitting there, because it cannot be stowed under the front seat for security reasons.
Permitted liquids on board
100 millilitre containers
You may carry liquids in your hand luggage in containers with a capacity of up to 100 millilitres and packed in a transparent, reusable one litre plastic bag (e.g. "zip bag").
- Please note that the printed maximum filling quantity and not the actual content applies.
- You may only take one plastic bag per person.
- Liquids include pastes, lotions, mixtures of liquids and solids, as well as the contents of pressure containers, such as toothpaste, hair gel, drinks, soups, syrup, perfume, shaving foam and other items with similar consistency as well as sprays, aerosols and gels.
Medication and special foods
Medication and special foods (e.g. baby food) required during the flight may be taken outside the plastic bag, but must be presented at the security control.
Duty-free items must be kept in the sealed safety bag provided at the point of sale.
All other liquids must be stowed in your checked baggage, otherwise they will be removed from you at the security control at the airport.
For more information, see the Document on liquids in hand luggage (PDF, 350 kB).
Notes for travellers entering the USA and South Africa
The above mentioned regulation is also applicable for flights to the USA. If you have a connecting flight to the USA, however, you must also note that only transparent, translucent or tinted containers are allowed in the standard safety bags. You must store metal containers or non-transparent containers in your checked baggage, because the security control of liquids in such containers is technically impossible at airports in the USA.
Please also note the List of prohibited and dangerous items.
Special hand luggage regulations apply to flights departing from and within South Africa. In Economy Class, you may carry a bag (max. 56 x 36 x 23 cm, weight max. 7 kg) and a narrow laptop bag. In Business Class, you may take two bags (max. 56 x 36 x 23 cm, weight max. 7 kg) and a narrow laptop bag.
