All it takes is a single glance: biometric facial recognition gives you fast and practically contactless access to security control, lounges and your boarding gate at a growing number of access points at various airports.
After completing a one-off registration for Star Alliance Biometrics, you can use all available biometric services at Vienna, Frankfurt, Munich and Hamburg airports as a guest with a valid flight ticket with Austrian Airlines, Lufthansa or SWISS.
From autumn 2025, additional departure gates at Frankfurt and Munich airports will be fitted with biometric access points, with Star Alliance Biometrics expected to be available at all departure gates from summer 2026.
How to use Star Alliance Biometrics on your trip
To use Star Alliance Biometrics, you need your valid passport and the latest version of the Star Alliance app on your smartphone. Registration for Star Alliance Biometrics only takes a few minutes.

1. Create your Star Alliance profile
Create your Star Alliance profile in just a few steps.
Consent in the Star Alliance app
Open the Star Alliance app on your smartphone. In order to use Star Alliance Biometrics, you must first consent to data collection and biometric identification.
Taking your photo
Take a photo of yourself for identification at the airport. In addition, please take a photo of your passport or, if possible, have the chip scanned for data reconciliation. Check the completeness of your passport data.
Automatic creation of your profile
After completing your registration, your details will be validated. Once the validation of your details is complete, you will be notified of the successful registration.
Privacy Policy: your biometric profile will be encrypted and stored exclusively in the Star Alliance app on your smartphone. For more details, please see our Privacy Policy for Star Alliance Biometrics.
2. Connect your Star Alliance profile with your boarding pass in the Austrian app
It is best to check in for your flight directly in the Austrian app and then access your mobile boarding pass. Scroll to the heading “Star Alliance Biometrics” and tap “Connect Boarding Pass”. The Star Alliance app will now open and your boarding pass will be linked to your biometric profile via face recognition. You can then use the biometric services available at your departure airport on your upcoming flight.

3. Use Star Alliance Biometrics at the airport
Biometric services at participating airports are easy to spot. The access points are marked with the Star Alliance Biometrics logo and corresponding floor markings.
When you are standing at a marked biometric access point, such as when entering security control, at the entrance to a lounge or at your boarding gate, all you need to do is look into the camera. This saves you time and requires neither your boarding pass nor your smartphone.
Frequently asked questions about Star Alliance Biometrics
You only need to register once to use Star Alliance Biometrics permanently. However, please remember that your boarding pass must be linked to your profile before each flight. The best way to do this is to check in on the Austrian app. On your mobile boarding pass, scroll to the heading “Star Alliance Biometrics” and tap the “Connect Boarding Pass” button that appears.
The boarding pass is transmitted to the Star Alliance app and linked to your biometric profile. After this, you can start using the biometric services for your chosen flight.
You will be asked to scan your boarding pass if biometric identification does not work at one of the access points.
Star Alliance Biometrics is a Star Alliance product. Your biometric profile is stored only in the Star Alliance app on your smartphone. Neither Star Alliance nor Austrian have access to your biometric profile data. Your data is only transferred to the respective airport’s database in compliance with the General Data Protection Regulation and used to identify you at the airport when you link your boarding pass to your biometric profile.
Even if you use Star Alliance Biometrics, you must carry your boarding pass with you at all times. There are still contact points where you need your boarding pass (e.g. border control). In addition, not all airports and access points are currently equipped with Star Alliance Biometrics.
