Mindful Travelling

Austrian Airlines is aware of its responsibility to our climate and pursues an ambitious decarbonisation strategy. As part of an integrated environmental strategy, there is a focus on reducing CO2 emissions and conserving resources.

“Mindful Travelling” campaign

In the “Mindful Travelling” campaign, employees from different areas show the measures being implemented that make Austrian Airlines more sustainable step by step.

In one of the total of six campaign videos, aircraft technician Harald explains the Lufthansa Cyclean cleaning process, which reduces fuel consumption and increases the service life of aircraft.

Our environmental responsibility

A responsible approach to the environment is part of Austrian Airlines’ corporate culture. We are committed to acting more sustainably with regard to the environment and future generations. Find out more about our initiatives for more sustainable flying here.

Fly more sustainably with Green Fares

Since 2023, the airlines of the Lufthansa Group have been the first airline group worldwide to offer Green Fares, their own fare model for more sustainable flying. Green Fares make more sustainable flying possible with just a single click, as a fare option including offsetting of the flight-related CO2 emissions. These emissions are offset 20% by using SAF and 80% by contributing to climate protection projects.

Use of sustainable aviation fuels (SAF)

Fuels known as Sustainable Aviation Fuels (SAF) are not produced from fossil raw materials, they are based on biomass, such as used cooking fats & oils. SAF thus save approximately 80% of the CO2 emissions over the life cycle compared to conventional kerosene. Austrian Airlines and the Lufthansa Group have been voluntarily using a certain amount of SAF for refuelling for several years already, and plan to increase the proportion in the coming years.

Fleet modernisation

Modern, more fuel-efficient aircraft and engine technologies are a key lever for reducing emissions from flight operations. Austrian Airlines constantly invests in renewing its aircraft. An Airbus A320neo or a Boeing B787-9 emit approximately 20% less CO2 than their predecessor models.

Operational efficiency

Austrian Airlines optimises flight operations on a daily basis through training and digital aids in order to save fuel. Routes and cruising altitudes are continuously adjusted. Data is evaluated after every flight to achieve further improvements. Measures such as switching off engines during taxiing are analysed and precisely assessed.

AIRail: Train and plane

In cooperation with ÖBB (the Austrian Federal Railways), the first AIRail connection between Vienna Airport and Linz was launched in December 2014. This cooperation offers passengers an alternative to a feeder flight to reach Vienna Airport. AIRail currently offers connections between Vienna Airport and the city centres of Linz, Graz, Salzburg or Innsbruck.

Melangerie 2Go

The initiative “Austrian Melangerie to go” (AM2GO) was created to reduce food waste on board. On longer European flights to Austria, unsold fresh food products are sold at a reduced price shortly before landing in Vienna. The passengers can then enjoy this food after their arrival.
