Definition of dangerous goods
Dangerous goods are articles or substances which are capable of posing a risk to health, safety, property or the environment. There are special regulations concerning the carriage of these items.
For safety reasons, the following dangerous goods may not be carried either on your person or in your luggage:
- Corrosive materials such as acids, wet batteries, mercury (exception: a medical or clinical thermometer per passenger)
- Containers with gases such as camping stoves, gas lighters with blue flames, transportable liquid oxygen systems (O₂)
- Flammable solids such as hurricane matches, dry spirits
- Flammable liquid materials such as wind-proof lighters, fuel, lacquers, alcohol > 70 % vol.
- Explosive materials such as explosives, fireworks, pyrotechnic material
- Poisonous materials such as pesticides, insecticides
- Infectious materials such as viral cultures
- oxidising materials such as dyes, bleach
- Radioactive material
- Miscellaneous dangerous goods or items such as magnetic material, combustion engines, stun guns, pepper spray, safety cases, e-bikes and other electronic transport which are powered by lithium batteries, regardless of the battery power such as hoverboards, mini segways, air wheels or foldable scooters
Medicines, toiletries, handheld electronic devices, lithium batteries and certain other items may be carried if they meet specific transport regulations.
Prohibited goods
The US Transport Security Administration (TSA) has adapted the safety regulations for flights to the USA from 30 June 2018. The listed of prohibited goods was adapted to include powders or similar substances alongside the current limitations for liquids (max. one litre, 100 ml per container). Powders or similar substances with a total of more than 350 ml in volume carried in hand luggage are no longer permitted in general. Powders or similar substances with less than 350 ml in volume may also be prohibited for being carried in hand luggage, for example if there is doubt about the identity of the material. For this reason, the Lufthansa Group recommends all passengers travelling to the USA to either not carry powders or similar substances at all or store them in checked baggage.
You can find more information on the Transportation Security Administration website.
Since February 2017 the safety recommendations of the European Aviation Safety Agency (EASA) prohibits the carriage of defective or recalled lithium batteries in aircraft.
