Seat reservation

Find out more about seat selection, seat categories and how to reserve a seat. Find out why your seat reservation guarantees a seat within a specific seat category, but not a specific seat.

Also visit our seat reservation page to find out about the available options for your booking.

Seat selection

With a seat reservation, you can reserve a specific seat category (e.g. Classic Seat, Preferred Zone Seat, Extra Legroom Seat) from a selection of available seats. If your fare does not include a free seat reservation or you do not make use of it, you will be automatically assigned a seat during online check-in. A seat reservation applies to a single leg of your flight. All seat bookings are subject to the General Terms and Conditions of Carriage for Passengers and Baggage.

If your fare includes free seat reservation, you can reserve a seat at the time of booking, online under My Bookings or later at check-in. If your fare does not include free seat reservation, you can reserve a seat in advance for a fee depending on your fare type and the seat category selected.

For flights operated by Austrian Airlines, you can make a seat reservation up to two hours before the scheduled departure time of your flight. Advance seat reservation is subject to the availability of the preferred seats and applies to a single leg of your flight. Charges quoted on austrian.com are billed in the currency of the departure country. Online offers, fares or conditions may change at any time without notice. The selection of bookable passenger seats varies depending on supply and demand.

Please note that a confirmed seat reservation does not guarantee a specific seat on board the aircraft (e.g. seat number 3A). The seat reservation refers to the selected seat category (e.g. Classic Seat, Preferred Zone Seat, Extra Legroom Seat, etc.).

Your seat may change for operational reasons. Although we do our best to avoid such changes, we cannot guarantee that you will keep the seat you originally selected. You are entitled to a refund if we are unable to offer you a seat in the category you booked.

There are two different types of seat map. We can offer you a detailed seat map for flights operated by the Lufthansa Group. For flights operated by partner airlines, only a simplified version of the seat map is available.

Children aged two or over, or who will turn two during the trip, require their own seat. For seat reservations, the same conditions as for adults apply. If your child is flying alone, read more about our care service for unaccompanied minors.

In accordance with the ENAC regulation (Ente Nazionale per l’Aviazione Civile [Italian Civil Aviation Authority]), we are obliged to inform you that you are entitled to a free seat reservation (Classic Seat) on flights to and from Italy if you are travelling with a child between two and twelve years of age. The Lufthansa Group will seat you together free of charge at check-in.

On flights to and from Canada, if we are not able to seat your child near an adult in your group, you can rebook your flight or cancel your trip.

On long-haul flights, cots are available for children under two years of age. A cot must be booked separately and before the seat reservation. If you have a child under two years old travelling with you, you also have the option of booking a seat and bringing an appropriate child restraint system, such as a baby carrier or child car seat, on board with you. You can find out more about it in our FAQs about travelling with children.

For more information on how to book a cot free of charge, please see our Help section.

For children under two years of age, please read our tips on Flying with small children to find out more.

Passengers with disabilities and a travelling companion can reserve seats free of charge if the relevant conditions are met. Please visit our accessible travel page for additional information about our services for passengers with disabilities, such as reduced mobility or sensory impairments.

Please note that in accordance with the ENAC (Ente Nazionale per l’Aviazione Civile) regulation, you are entitled to free seat reservation (Classic Seat) on flights to and from Italy if you are a passenger with a disability or are accompanying a passenger with a disability. We will reserve seats next to each other for you free of charge during check-in.

You can make or change a seat reservation via Austrian Airlines if you have purchased your ticket via a third party (e.g. travel agency). Simply visit our website and enter your details in the Manage booking section. You can then make a seat reservation in your booking for the flights displayed.

My booking

Seat reservations are only available to passengers who have booked a flight operated by Austrian Airlines with tickets issued. You can reserve your seat either at the time of booking, online in the “My Bookings” section up to two hours before departure or at check-in. Please note that all seat reservations are subject to availability. If your fare only includes automatic seat allocation, your seat reservation is subject to a charge.

You can easily reserve your seat online during the booking process, at a later date under My Bookings or during check-in. Simply select a seat for each passenger, confirm your selection and pay if necessary.

Please note that in some cases it is not possible to reserve a seat, for example, if you are not eligible for a seat reservation or if an attempt is made to reserve a seat outside the specified time frame. In such cases, the seat map in your profile will be deactivated.

You can book seats for different passengers individually in different seat categories. It is possible to reserve seats for all passengers travelling on the same booking number or only for some of them. Please note that a maximum of one seat is bookable per passenger per flight leg.

Please be aware that a seat reservation is not transferable.

Your seat reservation may need to be altered for operational reasons. Although we do our best to avoid this change, we cannot guarantee that you will receive the seat you originally selected. You are entitled to a refund of your seat reservation fee if we are unable to book you a seat in the category you reserved. Please note that the seat reservation fee does not entitle you to a specific seat (e.g. seat 3A), but to a specific seat category (e.g. Classic Seat).

You can make or change a seat reservation via Austrian Airlines if you purchased your ticket via a third party (e.g. travel agency). Simply visit our website and enter your details in the Manage booking section. You can then make a seat reservation in your booking for the flights displayed.

Seat reservations are possible for all flights operated by the Lufthansa Group, Edelweiss, Discover Airlines or Air Dolomiti. If a route is operated by one of our selected partner airlines and booked in combination with a Lufthansa Group flight, you can reserve a seat in advance.

Open your trip under My Bookings to see whether you can book a seat with our partner airline. Although we cannot guarantee that passengers will be seated next to one another, we always do our best to seat passengers travelling together next to each other.

If you add a seat reservation during the booking process, you can use any of the payment methods currently offered on austrian.com. Please note that online seat reservations made at a later date or during the seat sale at the check-in counter can only be paid for by credit card.

It is not possible to pay for a seat reservation with Miles & More at present.

You can change a seat that you have already reserved. There are no additional costs for any changes within the same seat category. Please note that the price difference will not be refunded if you choose a seat in a lower seat category. If you choose a seat in a higher seat category, you will have to pay the price difference.

Yes, you can reserve seats for all passengers within your group. You can select available seats on the seat map for each route individually for each passenger. Please also note our terms and conditions for group bookings if you are travelling with ten people or more.

If you made an advance seat reservation before the upgrade and your new travel class includes a seat reservation as standard, you are entitled to a refund of the seat reservation fee paid.

On flights with Brussels Airlines, Austrian, Lufthansa and SWISS, HON Circle Members and Senators are entitled to free seat reservations for themselves and up to eight travelling companions on the same booking. This benefit is subject to availability and does not apply to Economy Light fare bookings on short-haul flights. The Economy Light fare only offers HON Circle members free seat selection during online check-in for short-haul flights.

For all First and Business Class passengers, free Classic Seat reservation is included in the fare.

You won’t incur an additional Optional Payment Charge (OPC) for booking changes such as advance seat reservations and other services added at a later date. The OPC is only charged once and does not apply to booking insurance, making seat reservations, booking additional baggage, etc., nor to subsequent additional payments for rebookings.

Seat categories

If your fare includes free seat reservation or you have already added a seat reservation to your booking, you can change your seat free of charge within the same seat category, subject to availability. Please note that you will have to pay a fee if you want to upgrade your seat to a higher category, for example, from a Classic Seat to an Extra Legroom Seat.

The preferred seating area is located in the front part of Economy Class, directly behind Premium Economy or Business Class. A seat in the preferred seating area gives you more flexibility as it enables you to leave the aircraft quickly after landing.

Yes, we also offer reservations for seats with extra legroom. Please note that some of these so-called Extra Legroom Seats are located in the emergency exit rows.

Pregnant women, passengers with small children or animals, passengers under 16 years of age and passengers who do not understand instructions in English or German are not permitted to sit in an emergency exit row.

The following conditions apply to seat reservations in the emergency exit rows:

  • You must be at least 16 years old
  • You must understand instructions in English or German
  • You must not be pregnant
  • You must not be travelling with small children or animals

HON Circle Members and Senators have the option of reserving an Extra Legroom Seat for themselves and those travelling with them on the same booking number free of charge on flights with Austrian, Brussels Airlines, Lufthansa and SWISS. This benefit is subject to availability and does not apply to Economy Light bookings on short-haul flights. With the Economy Light fare, the option of selecting an Extra Legroom Seat free of charge on short-haul flights is only available to HON Circle Members during online check-in.

Before boarding and to ensure safety, Austrian is entitled to assign a different seat to passengers who do not meet the requirements. Failure to meet the requirements will invalidate a reservation for this type of seat. You will not be entitled to a refund of the charge paid. You will be allocated a different seat at the airport or on board. In the event of any doubt, the decision rests with the crew.
