Flights to Salzburg

After Austria’s capital Vienna the beautiful town of Salzburg (SZG) is the second biggest tourist magnet in the country. For most travelers coming here, it is the music that lures them, especially the Salzburg Festival. For five weeks in the summer, the city is the center of the world for lovers of classical music. It is held in honor of the city’s most famous son, Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart. You can still visit his house of birth in the Getreidegasse 9. During the Salzburg Festival, you can hear renditions of his works from string trio to opera by the best musicians and singers in the world.

Since 1996 the historic city center is on the UNESCO world cultural heritage list. A stroll through the back-alleys and little market places will give you a feel for the life people were leading during the baroque and rococo period. The city was ruled by the bishop, who had his residence on the fortress Hohensalzburg, one of the biggest castle complexes in Europe. In later times, the bishops of Salzburg built magnificent palaces near the city: Schloss Freisaal, Schloss Mirabell, Schloss Hellbrunn, Schlosses Kleßheim and Schloss Leopoldskron. The great cathedral matches the residences of the mighty bishops. All the luxury was paid with the natural salt that is mined in the surrounding area called Salzkammergut. If you go to nearby Hallstatt, you will find salt mines operated for hundreds of years by early Celtic people, therefore the name Hallstatt culture.
