Gothenburg

Seen from a European perspective, Gothenburg is quite young, the official founding date is 1619, which is not much older than Boston or New York. An ice-free natural harbor and access to the North Sea was the reason to put a city here, which until today has the biggest Swedish harbor. It is also the home to carmaker Volvo. It is possible to explore Gothenburg by boat, because the River Göta Älv and many canals are going through the city. With the help of Dutch immigrants the city once had a canal system not unlike Amsterdam, some of which still are in use today. While you’re afloat, visit the beautiful Gothenburg Archipelago that stretches along the coast. Thy iconic little red houses can be found on every little island, little villages and quaint inns want to be discovered. Back on dry land, visit the beautiful gardens of Gothenburg, like the 19th century park of the Trädgårdsföreningen (Garden Society) with a stunning palm house, which lies in the center next to the main station. In the Slottskogen Park you can meet real moose in a zoo for Nordic wildlife, but also enjoy free classical concerts by the Gothenborg Symphonic Orchestra. Gothenborg is an Eldorado for foodies, and it is fitting that the fish market resembles a church. Built in 1874, the Feskekörka is still the go-to place for fresh fish and other North Sea delights. The Stora Saluhallen are a food market from 1889, where 40 stalls are competing for the hungry customers with Swedish specialties, up to and including reindeer and moose. Visit the old city quarter of Haga, once the workers living quarters, today a lively area full of cafes and little boutiques. Here you have to try the cinnamon buns of Café Husaren, said to be the biggest in the city. If you are travelling with your kids, they will love the Liseberg amusement park, the biggest in Scandinavia. If the weather does not allow this option, head to the universeum, an adventure museum including an indoor rain forest. Have fun in Gothenburg, but don’t miss your Austrian flight back home!
