Cairo

Cairo

Cairo, the capital of Egypt, is the biggest city in Africa, known for its dense traffic and constant buzzle. The Pyramids and the Sphinx in the necropolis of Giza are of course the biggest draw for tourists. But it would be a shame to ignore the city itself, which has its very own history dating back to Roman times. At the end of the 10th century, the Fatimid dynasty took over Egypt, gave the city the name Al-Qahira and made it their capital. There are still hundreds of mosques that were built in this early Islamic period of Cairo. Even older are the Coptic churches of Old Cairo, an ancient Christian part of the city. Don’t miss the Al-Azhar Mosque, the oldest Mosque in Cairo, and its famous University, the oldest in the Islamic world.

The gigantic tombs of the Pharaohs Khufu, Khafre and Menkaure, as well as the Sphinx, are south of Cairo. Especially the Great Pyramid is on everybody’s must-see list, the last of the seven wonders of the ancient world still standing. To get an idea of the luxury of old Egypt, you need to spend some time in the Egyptian Museum with the world famous gold mask and thousands of other artefacts of the young Pharaoh Tutankhamun’s grave. Your time in Cairo will be surely a most splendid experience, so book your Austrian flight today.
