Even though the city is settled since prehistoric times, it earned its fame as the most beautiful city in the Islamic world when the Shah Abbas the Great made it his capital in 1598. He invited thousands of artists and artisans from his vast empire and built mosques, gardens and palaces that bedazzle visitors until today. His inspiration was the idea of paradise according to Islam. In the centre of the city is the Naqsh-e Jahan Square, the "Image of the World Square". It is the second biggest Square in the world, second only to Beijings Tiananmen Square. Here Abbas the Great left most of his buildings: Masǧed-e Emām and Lotfollāh Mosque are outshinig each other with beautiful, detailed tile work and enormous size. The entrance of the square is a palace called Ālī Qāpū, the Exalted Porte, with a 48 Meters high portal and beautiful frescoes inside. The Great Bazaar of Isfahan, where the world famous carpets are traded, is also part of the Square. In the Bagh-e Bulbul, the Garden of Nightingales, is another magnificent building, the Hasht Behesht, "Palace of the Eight Paradises". Over the Zayandeh Rud, Isfahan’s River, spans the Si-o-Se Pol, the "bridge of 33 arches“, a famous landmark of Isfahan. It will bring you the Julfa quarter, where for centuries the Armenian population of Isfahan has its home. They came here to work for Abbas the Great and stayed on until today. They have a beautiful church in the district, the Vank Cathedral, painted with frescoes from the 17th century. Get enchanted by the dazzling city and its friendly inhabitants and enjoy the backdrop right out of the fairy-tales of 1001 Night.
