Croatia became an independent country after Yugoslavia`s disintegration in the 1990`s, and is now a state of the European Union. It is located in Southeast Europe, and stretches along the coast of the Mediterranean Sea. It has about 4,5 million citizens, predominantly Roman catholic, and the capital is Zagreb. After independence, Croatia quickly regained its status as a popular vacation destination. Tourists, mostly from countries further North, enjoy the natural beauty and especially the beaches Croatia has to offer. This includes countless romantic little islands along the coastline. A major area for tourism is Dalmatia, with its capital Split. Despite its small size and population, Croatia excels in numerous team sports(football, basketball), as well as producing various world class individual athletes(tennis). Visitors can fly to Croatia with Austrian Airlines and discover one of the most beautiful destinations in the EU.
