Cape Town

Cape Town
Cape Town, South Africa: The founder of Cape Town, Jan van Riebeeck, actually wanted to create a vegetable garden at this spot for the sailors. The ships found a safe natural harbour that was secured by a little fortress, the Castle of Good Hope. It is the oldest European structure in Africa and you can still visit it today. There you find endless beaches, a mild climate and the exciting African landscapes surrounding the city. The old vegetable garden evolved into one of the best wine growing areas of the world. One of the most popular pastimes for tourists is a tour of the local wineries including the tasting of their high-class products. For the sun-worshippers and the beach lovers, there is the choice between popular and well known beaches like Camps Bay or Clifton, or you can find one of the many solitary bays along the cape where the beaches are empty and quiet. If you want to see the Big Five, the most dangerous African animals (lion, leopard, elephant, buffalo and rhino) you can visit them on private safari farms in the vicinity of Cape Town. The landmark of Cape Town is Table Mountain which has been declared a national monument. You can go up by cableway, which starts in the middle of Cape Town, or choose the hard but most rewarding way, hiking. Beach and mountain climbing will leave you hungry, so try the local specialties in the many restaurants and bistros of Cape Town. Bobotie is a casserole of minced mutton, Boerewors is a fried sausage that is a popular street food. Very traditional African dishes including springbok und kudu, extremely tasty antelope. Crayfish and mussels come fresh from the sea every day. Have fun in Cape Town, but don’t miss your Austrian flight back home!
