A steaming pizza lies on the TV host's plate. A housewife puts a bottle of red wine into her shopping basket and a construction worker bites into his fresh Focaccia. This is everyday life in Eataly. The slow food supermarket with restaurants and cafes on 5th Avenue opposite of the Flatiron building has been the pilgrimage site for Italophile gourmets for almost a year now. Some eat on the spot (there are 5 restaurants at choice), others take a piece of Italy home or to work. Or you learn how to transform the fine Italian ingredients into pasta at home with Eataly's cook Lidia Bastianich. The Eataly concept in New York comes from the caterers Mario Batali, Joe and Lidia Bastianich and Eataly-founder Oscar Farinetti, who also represents Eataly in Italy and Japan. From this summer onwards, Eataly guests will probably also have a few beers while looking at the wonderful skyline - La Birreria on the roof of the building is Eataly's newest addition. It follows the beer garden trend which is currently undertaking New York. Cheers! The supermarket is open daily. The restaurants as well. Opening hours vary.

Top of the Rock
The elevator shoots up 67 floors. Colourful lights are blinking through the glass roof and the hamburger you've just eaten will hopefully stay in your stomach. All around, excited guests are chattering and the first cameras are clicking. At the top, after just having arrived and still feeling jittery, there is only one goal: going even higher. The Top of the Rock, the highest of the three viewing platforms at choice, is located on the 70th floor - at a height of 853 feet, with a panorama view and a lot of fresh air. Needless to say, a lot of tourists will forge ahead, who wants to miss such a view, after all? Therefore perseverance is called for but thereafter you can fully enjoy the conquered view. Maybe strolling around a bit, then whipping out the camera and capturing the panorama: Central Park, the Empire State Building. Right over there, isn't that the statue of liberty? Top of the Rock is located on the roof of the General Electric-building which has been erected in art deco style between 1931 and 1933. After 9/11 it was closed for a considerable time. The ticket for the ride to the viewing platform costs 22 dollars for adults and 15 dollars for children.

Crosby Str. Hotel
Amidst Soho there is an eleven storey hotel with 86 rooms. On the roof: a garden with melons, tomatoes, herbs and four araucana hens that lay hazy blue eggs. Chef de cuisine Anthony Paris and his guests in the Crosby Bar are pleased, not only with the fresh ingredients that are used but also with the five o`clock tea - very british, isn`t it? Not only the bar but the whole Crosby Street Hotel was designed by interior architect and hotel owner Kit Kemp: coloured lampions, huge wing chairs and deep, candy-striped sofas, matching curtains, velvet and violet couches in the drawing room and classic white bedspreads. The latter remind of grandmotherly times in American country houses. Then there is the cinema with 100 seats, which screens selected films at 8pm on Sundays. Access is granted to hotel guests. Insider advice: Book a dinner-cocktail-film-combination!
