FAQ about the mask obligation
Thank you for protecting yourself and your fellow passengers by wearing a mask. We have summarised everything you need to know about the obligation to wear masks on board and at the airport for you on this page.
Due to the current Corona Ordinance of the Austrian Federal Government, masks in the form of a FFP2 are compulsory during your journey with Austrian Airlines until further notice. Higher classified masks can be worn in any case as long as they do not have a valve.
Please note that visors or all masks with a valve are not permitted. They do not provide comparable protection.
The mask obligation applies on board Austrian Airlines flights from the time of boarding until leaving the aircraft. Masks are also compulsory at all Austrian airports in the entire enclosed area. Please bring your own mask for your own protection and the protection of others and wear it during the entire flight. Our crew also wears masks during their entire stay on board. The mask may be removed briefly during the consumption of food and drink on board. Children under 6 years of age are still exempt from the mask requirement. If you cannot wear a mask for health reasons, you must have a Covid19 negative test (PCR test) and a current medical certificate using the Austrian Airlines form. The PCR test must not have been taken more than 48 hours before the scheduled departure time.
Unless you wear a mask and meet the requirements of the aforementioned exemption, we must exclude you from carriage for the protection of all fellow passengers. The airports have also set up an increased security distance and hygiene concept. Please follow the local instructions and guidelines given in each case.
As other countries may have different regulations to Austria, we still ask our passengers to inform themselves about the rules at their destinations (FFP2 mask wearing obligation, test, convalescence or vaccination certificates, etc.).
Wearing a mask is compulsory in the terminal. In all waiting areas, there are markings on the floor to ensure the required minimum distance is maintained. Only part of the seating capacity can be used in the lounge areas. Posters, digital displays and multilingual loudspeaker announcements additionally point out the applicable minimum distance rules. In addition, trained personnel are on duty on site to politely draw attention to the minimum distance - where this should become necessary.
When making purchases in the shops at the airport, we ask you to settle them without cash if possible.
At the check-in counters, ticket counters and wherever there is direct contact between you and our staff, panes of Plexiglas serve to protect your health on both sides. In addition, numerous dispensers with hand disinfectant are available with the request for regular use. Surfaces that are touched often are cleaned and disinfected frequently and regularly. At many airports, you can also check in contactlessly at appropriate kiosks or with your smartphone and check in your baggage contactlessly via the Fast Bag Drop.
Yes. Whenever it is necessary to compare your ID or passport photo, you may be asked to remove the mask.
During a depressurisation requiring the use of oxygen masks, the mask must be removed. The crew will instruct you accordingly.
In general, the risk of contracting the virus during a flight is extremely low. All aircraft of the Lufthansa Group Airlines are equipped with filters that always clean the cabin air. All circulated cabin air is filtered and cleaned of impurities such as dust, bacteria and viruses. The filtered air makes up about 40 per cent of the air on board. The rest is supplied as fresh air from outside. The filtration efficiency of these filters meets the standards for filters in clinical operating theatres. Thanks to these special filters, the cabin air is cleaner than the air people breathe on earth. In addition, the air flow in aircraft is from top to bottom. There is no horizontal airflow from side to side or along the length of the aircraft. Because of this elaborate air purification, we are not aware of any cases of contagion on our flights to date.
Yes, every passenger must wear a mask on board. The only exceptions to this obligation are children under the age of six and guests who cannot wear a mask for health reasons. In this case, the presentation of a current medical certificate using the Lufthansa Group form and an officially recognized Covid19 negative test (PCR test) is required. The PCR test must not have been carried out more than 48 hours before the scheduled departure time. Furthermore, the mask may be removed briefly during the consumption of food and beverages on board.
Regardless of the coronavirus, there are clear procedures on board in the event that cabin crew suspect a passenger may have a contagious disease. Some of these procedures include the following: Isolating the passenger by transferring them on board, using disinfectants, using personal protective equipment for crew members, immediately reporting this information to the authorities at the destination.
