Baggage

Some general information concerning your baggage:
Please mark each piece of baggage clearly with your name and address.
We recommend not to include articles like money, jewelry, computers (e.g. laptops, PCs), cameras, negotiable papers, personal items (such as keys…), securities, business documents, samples, passports and other identification documents in your checked baggage. Please carry these kinds of articles in your hand luggage.
Your free baggage allowance is stated on your ticket or on your booking confirmation.
Pieces of baggage weighing more than 32 kg will not be accepted at check-in. For pieces of baggage exceeding the maximum total dimensions of 158 cm (length + width + height) special transport conditions are applicable. Please notify us about such items in advance by telephone calling +43 5 1766 1000 or by our contact form.

Carry-on Baggage

How much carry-on baggage items you may carry on board is determined by the service class you have booked:

Economy Class: 1 x 8 kg
Business Class:  2 x 8 kg
trolley 1  Your carry-on baggage may not exceed the dimensions 55 x 40 x 23 cm and the weight of 8 kg.  It must be stored in the overhead bin or under the seat in front of you.  Please consider this when packing.  At the airport, the dimensions and the weight will be checked consistently at the boarding gate at the latest. Carry-on baggage which is too big or too heavy must be checked in. This will be charged if your free baggage allowance is exceeded. Please note, that the charges at the gate are considerably higher and can only be paid by credit card.

A foldable garment baggage with the maximum dimensions of 57 x 54 x 15 cm is also regarded as carry-on baggage.

In addition to your carry-on baggage you may take one personal item with a maximum size of 40 x 30 x 10 cm into the passenger cabin, e.g. one lady's handbag or one laptop bag or one shoulder-strapped bag.

Are you travelling with children up to 2 years of age?
Then you may take one of the following items on board:

  • 1 baby basket or
  • 1 child car seat or
  • 1 fully collapsible stroller  (max. 10 kg)

If you require baby food for your infant during the flight or if you need medicine due to your health condition, please carry these items in your hand luggage or personal item. Passengers with reduced mobility may take one pair of crutches or any other kind of prostheses into the passenger cabin.

Important: Depending on the operating aircraft type and/or fulfilling safety requirements of national authorities, in exceptional cases the hand baggage allowance for our Business class passengers may be reduced to 1 piece of hand baggage only.

Carry-on baggage restrictions

For security reasons, the European Commission has restricted the transportation of liquids (LAGs – liquids, aerosols and gels) in carry-on baggage when departing at an EU airport. Please note that outside EU, similar regulations regarding liquids may be in force. Such information usually may be obtained at the internet page of the respective airport. LAGs in carry-on baggage shall be presented separately from  carry-on baggage at the screening checkpoint.
Liquids in this context includes pastes, lotions, liquid/solid mixtures and the contents of pressurized containers, such as toothpaste, hair gel, drinks, soups, syrups, perfume, shaving foam and other items with similar consistencies.

The following liquids may be transported as carry-on baggage:
Liquids, gels and sprays must be held in individual containers not exceeding 100 ml (max. filling quantity as printed on container, not actual contents). The individual containers must be placed in a resealable (e.g. "zip-top") clear plastic bag with max. 1 liter capacity. Only one plastic bag is permitted per passenger. The bag has to presented separately at the screening checkpoint.
Duty free liquids in a sealed, standardized security bag, packed together with the receipt. The security bag must not be opened before arrival at the final destination. Exception: The security officer might need to open the security bag for screening and will re-seal the bag if applicable.
Liquids that are intended to be used during the trip and either required for medical purposes or a special dietary requirement, including baby food.

Here you may access further information on liquids in carry-on baggage.

Flights to the U.S.
Basically the above mentioned regulation is also applicable for flights to the U.S.
Passengers traveling internationally into the United States with a connecting flight will be permitted to carry-on liquids more than 100ml, provided they are presented in a secure, tamper-evident bag with a receipt reflecting the purchase was made within 48 hours. The receptacle containing the liquid must be clear, translucent or tinted. Liquids in opaque or metallic receptacles must not be kept on board when transiting, but packed in checked baggage.

Please observe the list of dangerous goods and prohibited articles below.

² In addition a fully collapsible baby stroller up to a weight of 10 kg will be transported free of charge for small children.
³ In case of membership- or status-cards we will consider the card which entitles you to the highest free baggage allowance. Cards are not combinable in this respect.
⁴ The definition “Intercontinental routes” at Austrian Airlines includes following countries: Canada, China, Cuba, Egypt, Hongkong, India, Iran, Iraq, Israel, Japan, Jordan, Kazakhstan, Libya, Mauritius, The Maldives, Sri Lanka, Thailand and USA.

Other Rules:
Regional exceptions may lead to a higher free baggage allowance in Economy Class, they are reflected in your ticket or booking confirmation.
Other rules and tariffs may apply on flights operated by our partner airlines (Codeshare). For special baggage requests please contact the operating carrier directly.
Different rules and tariffs may be applicable to myAustrian Holidays charter flights.
If you combine an Austrian Airlines flight with those of another carrier, please note that this airline's rules will also apply to Austrian flights if operating the longest or most significant part of the journey. Therefore we kindly recommend you to check your free baggage allowance stated on your ticket or on your booking confirmation. In this case the weight concept might also be applicable - then your free baggage allowance is based on the total baggage weight and the number of pieces is not restricted, e.g. 20K (for 20 kg) or 30K (for 30 kg).
According to US-DOT (United States Department of Transportation) and CTA (Canadian Transportation Agency) regulations, it is the first carrier stated on your ticket who defines the baggage rules applicable to the entire journey.

Excess Baggage

In case your baggage exceeds the permitted free baggage allowance, an excess baggage charge will be levied. The charges depend on the flight route and differ whether you take additional pieces with you or your permitted item is heavier or bigger than the standard limits.

Pieces of baggage weighing more than 32 kg will not be accepted at check-in.
For pieces of baggage exceeding the maximum total dimensions of 158 cm (length + width + height) special transport conditions are applicable. Please notify us about such items in advance by telephone calling  +43 5 1766 1000 or by our contact form

Sport Equipment

Do you want to take your sports equipment with you?

Sports equipment is part of your free baggage allowance if its size with respect to number and weight is within the stated limits.

Due to capacity reasons we can only transport sports equipment which has been confirmed in advance for your entire journey. Therefore please register your sports baggage under +43 5 1766 1000 or via our contact form. We check, if the required service can be confirmed on the flights you have booked. We ask for your understanding, that unconfirmed sports equipment will not be accepted by our check-in staff. Possible follow up costs (e.g. storage) have to be borne by you. This is also applicable for ski equipment irrespective of whether your ski bags are within your free baggage allowance or will be checked in as excess baggage.

If the transport of your sports equipment is exceeding your free baggage allowance, sport equipment charges are applicable to defined items.
At check-in only pre-notified sporting equipment up to a maximum weight of 32 kg is accepted. The transport has to be confirmed in the reservation in advance. Sports equipment which is not contained in the following list or which exceeds the defined contents is charged according to the normal excess baggage rates.
