Zurich

Zurich

Zurich is the largest city in Switzerland. It is located in the German-speaking North of the country, on the banks of lake Zurich. Kloten airport is the major hub for the entire country, and serves numerous locations domestically, within Europe, and overseas. You can fly to Zurich with Austrian Airlines from neighbouring country Austria. Zurich is well known for its banking industry. Hundreds of financial institutions are either based in the city, or operate subsidiaries and branches there. This makes the city a very affluent place, quite expensive for tourists and visitors, a fact one should be aware of when travelling here. However, Zürich is surrounded by great scenery, lakes, mountains, and has many historic buildings, especially in the city center. Furthermore, it also boasts a surprisingly active nightlife and vibrant culture for its relatively small size.

Kindli

The Kindli is one of these honest hotels one likes to visit and likes to leave again. And one likes to remind it.  Here, they've been in the hospitality business for 500 years already. While in former times the pious ones with their very pious thoughts flocked to the Christian hospice and its very pious landlord, today's guests wash away their sins on Grander water. They put their heads on Hästens pillows and pray that their credit cards last through their shopping sprees at Zurich's top designers around the corner. But also the restaurant is worth its price: While the Mediterranean-inspired cuisine has not much room for tight belts, it has made room for Hanny Fries, whose pictures are on the restaurant's wall. On the wine card you find the noblest champagne as well as red and white wines from all over the world. One thing for sure: With its fountain in front of the windows, its Laura Ashley style and the church bells in the morning, the Kindli is one of the most romantic hotels in town. Whether it's still as pious as in former times we can't say. Double room from 277 Euros per night.

Zürichberg

The Hotel Zürichberg is well off with its top location: on a hill above the town, amidst rolling hills, meadows and woods, with a terrific view of Zurich and the lake. Here, guests can rest and recreate, protected from noise and stress. The Art Nouveau building's façade hides what awaits you inside: top-class design.   Noble parquet floors, shades in mauve and red and great designers such as Arne Jacobsen and Jasper Morrison forebode only good things for a good night's sleep. And late sleepers and caffeine junkies have only to steps to walk before reaching their own Nespresso machine on their room. While George Clooney is not included, the noble Restaurant R21 has other goodies in store. The Mediterranean cuisine is almost as attractive as George. We recommend a glass of champagne on the breathtaking terrace of Zürichberg and lots of idleness. And if that's not enough for you, you can also set out on a discovery trip in the woods behind the hotel. Double room from 219 Euros per night.

Seegarten

Everything's a bit artsy here, a bit casual and easy-going. The Hotel Seegarten adapts to the vicinity of the lake, pouring oil on troubled water with its famous calm before the storm.   The Seefeld district is not a quiet one, after all. Many bars, stores and galleries demand a high degree of shopping discipline, weigh heavy on credit cards and make visitors dizzy with shopping frenzy. We recommend you keep your nerve and quickly check into the Seegarten Hotel because there you will be able to catch your breath. Its Mediterranean flair, its rattan furniture and the terracotta floors make the world appear much more relaxed.   No wonder that the hotel became a pilgrimage shrine for the stressed-out. Among the media and advertising trades the hotel enjoys great popularity. Apart from its nice atmosphere you can also enjoy delicious culinary treats dished up by Restaurant Latino, very leisurely and stress-free, of course. You will seldom find a more uncomplicated hotel than the Seefeld in clockwork Switzerland. Double rooms from 187 Euros per night.

SIGHTS in Zurich

Kreislauf 4+5

Kreislauf 4+5 is the creative heart of Zurich: Here, fledgling designers create the labels of tomorrow, artists invent the art of tomorrow in their studios and chefs conjure up the cuisine of tomorrow. Everything that has to do with art, trend or style is at home here. And so it was only a question of time before the artists' quarter installed its own open house.  The latter is called Kreislauf 4+5 here, introducing all visitors to a creative microcosm that offers anything connected with a city's lifestyle. Every May you can browse around in architectural books, buy unique furniture or devote yourself to fusion food over a coffee. Whatever you need, you can buy it at Kreislauf. And a book of the same name serves as guide through the large quarter including portraits of all stores around here. And if that's still not enough you can go on a 2-hour tour with insiders that will point out your favourite stores.

Museum

The Museum of Design holds everything its name promises, accommodating almost all kinds of art under its roof.  The collection comprises design, graphic art, posters and art, and if you don't know what that means we are eager to explain. What is exhibited here might be a TV from 1969, or an eggcup with salt shaker. But you can also see advertising material, film posters, a French perfume flacon, or even a cocktail dress here. Everything that's connected with design, everything that's art, everything that people do when they do art, is exhibited at this museum. While the artists are often anonymous, everything that's shown here - from make-up to burnt furniture - is definitely worth seeing. And if you want to know more about the topic you can participate in diverse workshops or talk shop with exhibition experts. And once you are leaving the museum again you can be sure that you've learned something new. So take your time!

Design Factory

Good ideas should be handed on. Especially those like the Senior Design Factory in Zurich which brings the young and old together: for meals, chats and getting creative - for example during a knitting workshop.   The idea for this project - building bridges between generations - comes from the Zurich designer Debora Biffi and Benjamin Moser. Crucial: her diploma thesis and Andy Warhol with his Silver Factory in New York melting art and consumption. The result: in March 2011 the first Senior Design Factory subsidiary opened with shop, atelier and workshop room located on Josefstraße. You can buy interior accessories, recipe cards, tea, brushes and household items. In autumn a second subsidiary opened on the pulsating shopping street, only a few houses away - with café and restaurant.   Maybe you need to wait a moment longer for you coffee which you order from the 70-year-old waitress. But you'll possibly receive a charming smile in compensation. Also at the knitting workshop for beginners and advanced knitters with senior designers aged 90. Stop by, it can only get exciting!

Acqua

If you want to get closer to the water you have to be in the water. The outdoor lounge of Acqua promises the probably best view of sailing boats, mountains and Lake Zurich's sparkling blue. Such a panorama does only harmonise with the noblest interior, of course. The terrace is white and made of wood, suiting a fish meal after a long walk along the promenade. But the restaurant is luxurious inside as well: large windows, a lot of mother-of-pearl and space for a conservative clientele concluding perfect deals over a perfect dinner.   The menu is as fresh as morning dew, combining seasonal and regional specialties. Fish and meat are grilled, the pizza comes from the wood stove and the guests come from the general assembly. And that's how the prices are defined. Acqua is not cheap but it is good. And you can get great brunches here. On Sundays they serve Mediterranean "Brunch al Lago" from 10.00 to 14.00.

Aura

Aura in the Alte Börse in Zurich stands for a restaurant, bar, smoker's lounge and big event hall. It's the work area inhabited by Joachim Karsten, well-known in the city for his work at Tao's on Bahnhofstraße which was given a European-Asian cuisine by him.   At Aura in the financial districts it's a bit more meaty - BBQ specials (like blade steak, bison filet or burger) are grilled on the open barbecue in front of the guests' eyes, according to the guests' wishes. Fish lovers' palates are tickled by salmon steaks, zander filets or lobster with tomato-basil-butter. And for dessert (which by the way opens the menu) they serve apple-blueberry-clafouits or caramel flan.   This meal wants to be digested well - that's why you head to the second floor of the venue - to the Smoker's Lounge or the bar. By the way, Aura has been furnished by Evelyne Haussener. She is mother of the CEO of the Tao group that - apart from Aura - comprises Tao as well as the clubs Indochine and Icon.

Iroquois

A typical American diner with typical megalomania: Here, cholesterol junkies can enjoy the biggest burger in town. "Big Mama" is not apt for single eaters though. 2-4 persons can easily take a nip from the beef with bacon and cheese. If you still order side dishes you are either the chief or very hungry. But what else is on the menu? Tex-Mex of the finest, naturally. Chilli, nachos and tortillas are the restaurant's specialties, and also the Swiss like them.   Don't ask how your stomach feels afterwards, but if you treat yourself to burgers every once in a while you can't do anything wrong. Only the lunches are slightly more European: Bratwurst, Greek salad and hash browns, while being less American, still taste good. The evening programme is a further highlight at the Iroquois: While having your meal at the bar you can watch the current soccer games on a giant screen. What's an American bar without sports TV anyway?

SHOPPING in Zurich

Pelikamo

The bulky pelican in the label is fortunately not a guideline for the men's styling who stop by Pelikamo in Zurich. They rather come into the former bank house - only a few minutes away from Bahnhofstraße and the tradespersons - because of the straight menswear by Mismo, Lavenham, Aesop or Pelikamo.   There are bilious green pants lying next to the pink sweater and the moss-green loafers - and everything looks impeccable. Evidently a woman had a hand in the store concept. Together with three men Mia Zeltner has opened Pelikamo in 2011. Apart from garments they also offer tartly scented candles and whiskey from a Swiss distillery. Between the fittings they let their male customers sit on the retro sofa and give them magazines to read - to reflect over certain matters. Randy Kündig, the kind soul at Pelikamo will bring an espresso. It might be possible that the suit trousers will still not fit after that. But that shouldn't be a problem as the in-house tailor will change the garment or make a new pair for you.

Zero Zero

Where the world is still a disc, the world is fine. At the Zero Zero you won't find a double zero as it sells only the best the music world has in store. At the perhaps best-assorted and largest record store in town music fans will find anything their heart desires. A comprehensive discography of rock's history, a lot of reggae and much Indie is big here. Our tip: If you arrive here on Thursdays, DJ Rexx will advise you and he is a true expert.   You cannot only buy records here but also the fitting streetwear. Labels like Superdry, Abercombie and Goorin are the right outfits for Hip Hop and Co. And if you own something that you don't need anymore you've found the right place, too. The Zero Zero buys anything in the fields of CD, DVD, records or games. They even pick up bulkier stuff at your home. There is one genre though that even deters the wildest record dealers: The store doesn't sell hits and they are not bought here either.

Limited Stock

Have you experienced something like that, too? You step into a store and immediately ask yourself where you will place the stuff you are going to buy in a minute. And still you buy it, and later on you have garden shears although you have no garden.   At Limited Stock you can devote yourself to passionate collecting. You'll find anything that makes your heart leap, always combined with the buzz words you want to hear: rare, for example, or unique piece, or limited edition. Hubert Spörri and Ulrich Zickler have travelled to the remotest spots in the world to bring along all those things that look simply good but probably are of no use at all. You want them anyway? Then come by here and discover a world of rare snails, fossil wood, noble viennese glass or garden gadgets. You will find something you would never have guessed you could use, for sure!
