Children usually enjoy flying - whether they are travelling in the company of adults or alone. We provide special services for families with children throughout the entire journey.

Travelling with children

Are you travelling with one or more small children? Please note, that  due to flight safety reasons babies and children (up to 11 years) must be accompanied by an adult in the same class on Austrian Airlines flights. You may request Austrian Airlines staff against a surcharge for accompanying

  • children between 3 months and 5 years
  • an adult passenger travelling with 2 infants (up to 2 years)


Children  aged between 5 and 11 years may travel on their own under our supervision - find the respective conditions below  under "Safe travel for your child travelling alone".

Booking - Special Services

You may pre-book the following special services at time of your flight reservation (please book at least 24 hours before departure):

  • pre-reservation of seats so family members can sit together
  • baby cradle/bassinet (for infants from 6 to 9 months and with max. weight of  11 kg) on long-haul routes aircraft Boeing 777 and Boeing 767
  • special baby and child meals (in Economy Class on flights of 3 hours and above).

 

Bring your child's own infant/car seat:

Simply reserve a seat for your child at the applicable child fare well ahead of time. Our aircraft seats accommodate the following popular brands and models.  You may bring different models of child restraint devices. Due to safety reasons the device may not be used during take off and landing and when the fasten seat belt sign is switched on. The bottom of the car seat may not exceed
40cm x 40cm (15.7 x 15.7inch).

 

Child restraint harness   

The "Cares kids fly Safe" child restraint harness is approved for the use on board Austrian Airlines flights. If you want to bring such a harness please consider that  it is restricted to children

  •  weighing between 10-20kg (22-44 pounds), and/or
  •  not exceeding a height of max. 1 m (40inch)  

 

Please note that children under 2 years require their own seat for fastening this restraint harness and notification to specialcases@austrian.com is required.   
 

You travel with a baby stroller?  

A fully collapsible baby stroller up to a weight of 10 kg will be transported free of charge for children up to 2 years on Austrian Airlines flights. You may take it to the aircraft door where it will be loaded by our loading staff.  Strollers weighing more than 10kg must be checked in.  In this case please observe the  free baggage allowance for children.


On board

Children and their accompanying adults board the aircraft first, before all other passengers. And while in the air we make the time fly by with toys, games and puzzles for youngsters plus a special children's entertainment programme on our long-haul flights.

Safe travel for your child travelling alone

We offer supervision service against a surcharge for

  • children traveling alone aged between 5 and 11 years
  • youth between 12 and 18 years on parents' special request.


 

The parents or guardians will need to…

  • book the flight and organize any necessary travel documents (passport, visa for the destination country if necessary, travel insurance, etc.).
  • provide us with the names, addresses and telephone numbers of the adults bringing the child to the airport/collecting the child from the airport when making the booking. Our staff only hands over the child to the person specified by you.
  • pay the fare together with a supervision charge per child travelling alone and flight. Please mind that in case of code share flights the operating carrier's rule
    is applicable.
  • fill in the Handling Advice form, print  four copies and sign them.
  • please meet us directly at the Check-in counter. In Vienna we offer a special assistance counter for this purpose located in terminal "Check-in 3".

 

Please observe, that the accompanying person is required to remain at the airport until the child's flight has actually taken off! 


The child...

  • receives at time of check-in a small travel pouch (UM bag) for all essential documents and is taken into our custody.
  • will be accompanied by our ground staff to the aircraft and will be handed over to our flight crew.
  • is in custody of our flight attendants on board during the entire flight.
  • is met by our ground staff upon de-boarding and is handed over to the designated person as stated on the Handling Advice. The person must prove his/her identity.

 

Charge per child travelling alone for tickets issued as of 1. September 2012 

Following charges will be levied per child and per  flight:  

 Per Flight Charge 
 Domestic (within Austria)  EUR 40,-  / USD/CAD   60,-
 Europe  EUR 40,-  / USD/CAD   60,-
 Intercontinental   EUR 80,-  / USD/CAD 120,-

Examples:
If your child is travelling from Vienna to London (flight within Europe) we charge EUR 40,-.
If your child is travelling from Graz via Vienna to London we charge EUR 80,- for these 2 flights. 

Different rates may be applicable on other carriers.
