Baggage

A single item of hand baggage may not exceed the dimensions 55x40x23 cm and the weight of 8 kg. You can check this using the hand baggage gauge at the airport. Any items above these limits will have to be checked in. Please bear this in mind when packing to ensure that your checked baggage does not exceed the free baggage allowance.

Here's how much hand luggage you may carry on board:

Economy Class passengers: 1 item weighing up to 8 kg
Business Class passengers: 2 pieces up to 8 kg each  

A foldable garment baggage with the maximum dimensions of 57x54x15cm is also regarded as hand luggage.

In addition to your hand luggage you may take one personal item with a maximum size of 40x30x10cm (16x12x4in) into the passenger cabin, e.g.  one lady's handbag or one  laptop bag or one shoulder-strapped bag.   

Are you travelling with children up to 2 years of age?
Then you may take one of the following items on board:  

• 1 baby basket or
• 1 child car seat or
• 1 fully collapsible stroller  (max. 10 kg)

If you require baby food for your infant during the flight or if you need medicine due to your health condition, please carry these items in your hand luggage or personal item. Our passengers with reduced mobility may take one pair of crutches or any other kind of prostheses into the passenger cabin.

Important:
Depending on the operating aircraft type and/or fulfilling safety requirements of national authorities, in exceptional cases the hand baggage allowance for our Business class passengers may be reduced to 1 piece of hand baggage only.

Hand luggage restrictions

Liquids
Liquids may only be carried on board in a resealable clear plastic bag.

Please make sure you observe the following rules, otherwise your liquids may be confiscated at the security checkpoint:

• Liquids, gels and sprays must be held in individual containers not exceeding 100 ml (max. filling quantity as printed on container, not actual contents).
• The individual containers must be placed in a resealable (e.g. "zip-top") clear plastic bag with max. 1 liter capacity.
• Only one plastic bag is permitted per passenger.
• Please present the plastic bag for separate screening at the security checkpoint.

Transfer via Vienna
Are you changing flights in Vienna? The above regulations apply worldwide. More details are available on the Vienna International Airport website.
Various additional restrictions may also apply, especially for duty free liquids purchased on board or at the airports on the individual legs of your journey.
The planned simplification for transport of liquids, aerosols and gels carried as hand luggage which should have been effective per 29. April 2011 has been postponed.

For flights from EU member states, Switzerland, Norway, Iceland, Canada (international airports), Malaysia (KUL), Croatia (DBV, PUY, RJK, SPU, ZAD, ZAG), Singapore (SIN) and international US airports following rules apply:  

Liquids, gels and aerosols purchased at airport shops or on board must be placed in a sealed, tamper-evident bag clearly labeled with the place and date of purchase. The sealed bag may not be opened until you have cleared security at your final destination.  

Any liquids, gels and aerosols purchased in other countries as mentioned above, will be confiscated at VIE.  Please observe the list of dangerous goods and prohibited items.

EXCESS BAGGAGE

In case your baggage exceeds the permitted free baggage allowance, an excess baggage charge will be levied. All fees shown below are for a one-way trip and apply for journeys starting on Austrian Airlines.

The respective fee is based on the applicable free baggage allowance concept, which is reflected in your ticket or booking confirmation, and the issuance date of your ticket.

In addition a supplementary Excess Baggage Ticket Service Charge will be levied, the amount depends on the departure airport and varies between EUR 10,- and EUR 19,-.

Excess baggage fees – piece concept 

The charge per piece depends on the number of pieces, its individual weight and dimensions and the issuance date of your ticket.  

Piece concept charges for tickets issued as of 15th January, 2013 

Following charges for baggage within the free bag allowance are applicable in case the maximum weight and/or dimensions per piece are exceeded:

** The transport of baggage exceeding the maximum single item weight of 
     32kg and/or the maximum dimensions of 158 cm is subject to special
     transport conditions and has therefore to be prenotified at the time of
     booking.

A reduced charge for the second bag on all flights to/from/via USA, Canada and Mexico is applicable to Economy Class passengers with a free bag allowance of 1 piece:

 Excess baggage fees - weight concept 

The fee for 1 kg of excess baggage depends on your route. The countries are assigned to different zones. The respective charges can be found here.

SPORTS EQUIPMENT 

Are you travelling with sports equipment? Please notify us in advance via telephone +43 (0)5 1766 1000 or by our contact form so we can reserve sufficient space as acceptance depends on space availability in the aircraft compartment.

One set of ski- or snowboard equipment per person is free of charge on all flights operated by Austrian Airlines, except to/from/via USA and Canada.

Are you a HON-Circle Member, STAR Gold Card holder or Senator?
If so, you are granted 1 golf bag free of charge.

The transport of your sports equipment might be subject to an additional charge depending on the type of sporting equipment and the issuance date of your ticket.

If applicable, in addition to this fee a Ticket Service Charge will be levied, the amount depends on the departure airport.

Applicable to tickets issued as of 1st June, 2012

Austrian Airlines are simplifying the rules for sports equipment.
Sports equipment is part of your free baggage allowance if its size with respect to number and weight  is within the stated limits.
If the transport of your sports equipment is exceeding your free baggage allowance, excess baggage charges are applicable:

• according to the sports equipment charges provided your sporting equipment is on this list and lies within the respective definition
• according to the piece concept charges as documented above in case you want to take another sporting equipment or its contents lies beyond the specific definition.  

Applicable to tickets issued until 31st May, 2012:

Depending on the specific item or its size and dimensions sports equipment is divided into 3 categories: SMALL, MEDIUM and LARGE
Sports equipment of category "SMALL" is part of your free baggage allowance if its size is within the stated limits.

If your baggage includes small sports equipment and exceeds the free bag allowance, or your sports equipment falls into the category "MEDIUM" or "LARGE", the following charges are applicable.

Dangerous goods

Dangerous goods are articles or substances which are capable of posing a risk to health, safety, property or the environment.

Special regulations are applicable for the transport of these goods.

Do not carry the following dangerous articles in your baggage or on your person:

• Disabling devices, e.g. mace, pepper sprays or similar containing irritant or incapacitating substances.
• Elektro shock weapons
• "Strike anywhere" matches
• Blue flame or "Cigar"lighters, lighter fuel or lighter refills
• Liquid oxygen devices
• Alcoholic beverages exceeding 70 % alcohol by volume
• Explosives, e.g. fireworks, ammunition with explosive or incendiary projectiles
• Flammable or spontaneously combustible liquids or solids, e.g. fuel white gas, paint, solvents, alcohol exceeding  80 % by volume, charcoal lighter.
• Oxidizing material, e.g. stain, bleaches
• Organic peroxides, e.g. hardener for fiberglass
• Toxic substances, e.g. pesticides, insecticides
• Infectious substances, e.g. diagnostic specimens
• Radioactive material
• Corrosive material, e.g. Mercury
• Magnetized material 

The following dangerous goods may be carried under special transport conditions:

• Aerosols
• Alcoholic beverages
• Ammunition
• Avalanche rescue backpack
• Battery powered wheelchairs/mobility devices

The EU has prohibited the import of meat and dairy products into the European Community unless they are submitted for veterinary control at a border inspection post – this is to contain the threat of foot and mouth disease and other infectious livestock diseases.
