    Please note, that the membership- or statuscard, which entitles you to the highest free baggage allowance, will be applicable. In this respect, cards are not combinable.

    • 1 umbrella or walking stick
    • 1 handbag
    • 1 small camera or set of binoculars
    • Children up to 2 years of age: 1 baby carrier, child car seat or fully collapsible stroller (folded approximately the size of an umbrella)

     

    Important: Passengers on flights to/from the USA may only carry one piece of hand baggage each.

    Important articles in your baggage:

    We recommend not to include articles like money, jewellery, computers (e.g. laptops, PCs), cameras, negotiable papers, securities, business documents, samples, passports and other identification documents in your checked baggage.
    Please carry these kinds of articles in your hand luggage.

    Please mark each piece of baggage clearly with your name and adress.

    A single item may not be heavier than 32 kg or exceed total dimensions of 158cm (length + width + height), otherwise it cannot be transported as checked baggage. Any larger or heavier items must be shipped as cargo.

    If you are travelling with excess baggage, please notify us in advance on tel. +43 (0)5 1766 1000 so we can reserve sufficient space for it.

    Different free baggage allowances apply on charter flights – please ask your tour operator.


  • Hand luggage / restrictions
  • A single item of hand baggage may not be larger than 55x40x23 cm or weigh more than 8 kg. You can check this using the hand baggage gauge at the airport. Any items that exceed these limits will have to be checked in. Please bear this in mind when packing to ensure that your checked baggage does not exceed the free baggage allowance.

    Here's how much hand baggage you may carry on board:

    Economy Class passengers: 1 item weighing up to 8 kg

    Business Class passengers, HON Circle Members: 2 items, the first weighing up to 8 kg, the second up to 4 kg (the latter may also be a suit bag with max. dimensions of 57x54x15cm). 

    Important: Depending on the operating aircraft type and/or fulfilling safety requirements of national authorities, in exceptional cases the hand baggage allowance fo our Business class passengers and HON Circle Members may be reduced to 1 piece of hand baggage only.


    Hand luggage restrictions

    Liquids: Liquids may only be carried on board in a resealable clear plastic bag.

    Please make sure you observe the following rules, otherwise your liquids may be confiscated at the security checkpoint:

    • Liquids, gels and sprays must be held in individual containers not exceeding 100 ml (max. filling quantity as printed on container, not actual contents).
    • The individual containers must be placed in a resealable (e.g. "zip-top") clear plastic bag with max. one litre capacity.
    • Only one plastic bag is permitted per passenger.
    • Please present the plastic bag for separate screening at the security checkpoint.

    You may also carry the following additional items:

    • baby food
    • special dietary food
    • medicine

     

    Transfer via Vienna


    Are you changing flights in Vienna? The above regulations apply worldwide. More details are available on the Vienna International Airport website.

    Various additional restrictions may also apply, especially for duty free liquids purchased on board or at the airports on the individual legs of your journey.


    Restrictions in place for your intended journey:

    Flights from EU member states, Switzerland, Norway, Croatia, Iceland and Singapore

    Liquids, gels and sprays purchased at airport shops or on board must be placed in a sealed, tamper-evident bag clearly labelled with the place and date of purchase. The sealed bag may not be opened until you have cleared security at your final destination.

    Flights from non-EU member states

    Liquids, gels and sprays purchased at non-EU airport shops or on board non-EU carriers and which do not comply with the above regulations (e.g. spirits) must be disposed of at the security checkpoints. There are no check-in facilities for articles of this kind in the transit area at Vienna International Airport.

    Flights from/via the USA

    If you have an onward flight to the USA, liquids, gels and sprays purchased from the airport duty free shops or our in-flight shop may not be carried in your hand baggage on this onward flight. Click here for more info.

    Domestic flights in China

    On Chinese domestic flights you may carry a max. total of 1 litre of liquids in your hand baggage. Alcohol is prohibited.

    Flights from Iraq

    Lighters are prohibited in hand baggage.

    Flights from India

    Special dietary food is prohibited in hand baggage.

    Flights from Russia

    Each passenger may carry up to 10 sealed plastic bags. You may carry 5 litres of alcoholic beverages (max. 70% vol.) in your hand baggage, providing they were purchased at the airport.

    Dangerous goods are articles or substances which are capable of posing a risk to health, safety, property or the environment.

    Special regulations are applicable for the transport of these goods.


    Do not carry the following dangerous articles in your baggage or on your person:

    • Disabling devices, e.g. mace, pepper sprays or similar containing irritant or incapacitating substances.
    • Security-type equipment such as attaché cases or cash boxes/bags etc.
      incorporating dangerous goods, such as lithium and/or pyrotechnic material.
    • "Strike anywhere" matches
    • Blue flame or "Cigar"lighters, lighter fuel or lighter refills
    • Liquid oxygen devices
    • Alcoholic beverages exceeding 70 % alcohol by volume
    • Explosives, e.g. fireworks, ammunition with explosive or incendiary projectiles
    • Flammable or spontaneously combustible liquids or solids, e.g. fuel white gas, paint, solvents, alcohol exceeding  80 % by volume, charcoal lighter.
    • Oxidizing material, e.g. stain, bleaches
    • Organic peroxides, e.g. hardener for fiberglass
    • Toxic substances, e.g. pesticides, insecticides
    • Infectious substances, e.g. diagnsotic specimens
    • Radioactive material
    • Corrosive material, e.g. Mercury
    • Magnetized material

    The European Union defines articles in the Commission Regulation (EC) No 820/2008 of 08August 2008, laying down measures for the implementation of the common basic standards on aviation security, which may not be transported in hand baggage or checked baggage:

    If your baggage exceeds the permitted free baggage allowance, please notify us in advance on tel. +43 (0)5 1766 1000 so we can reserve sufficient space for it.

    All fees shown are for a one-way trip and apply for journeys started on Austrian Airlines. Different rules and rates may be applicable on other carriers.

    For Excess Baggage and Sports Equipment a supplementary Excess Baggage Ticket Service Charge of EUR10 will be levied.

    The fee for 1 kg of excess baggage depends on your route. The countries are assigned to different zones.

    Flights to/from the USA and Canada – piece concept

    In this case your free baggage allowance is as follows: 


    in Economy Class:

    • for tickets issued on/before 31DEC2009: 
      2 bags of max. 23 kg each and max. total dimensions of 158cm
      (L + W + H).
    • for tickets issued on/after 01JAN2010:
      1 bag of max 23kg and max. total dimensions of 158cm
      (L + W + H). For a second baggage within those limits a fee of EUR 40 or USD/CAD 50 applies.

    in Business Class:

    • 2 bags of max. 32 kg each and max. total dimensions of 158cm
      (L + W + H).

    For any additional piece of baggage and/or baggage exceeding the max. weight and/or dimensions special charges will be applied. You can find information on those charges here .

    SPORTS EQUIPMENT

    If you are travelling with sports equipment, please notify us in advance on
    tel. +43 (0)5 1766 1000 so we can reserve sufficient space for it.

    Sports equipment of category "SMALL" is part of your free baggage allowance if it is within the stated limits.

    If your baggage exceeds the free bag allowance, or your sports equipment falls into the category" MEDIUM" or "LARGE", the charges for tranportation are as stated in the table below.

    1 ski- or snowboard equipment per person is free of charge.

    Exception:

    Are you an HON-Circle Member, Senator or Frequent Traveller? If so, you may carry 1 item of sports equipment in the "small" category or 1 golf bag (max. 15 kg) free of charge.

     

    Flights to/from the USA and Canada

    Sports equipment in the "small" category counts as part of your free bagagge allowance, provided it does not exceed the specified max. weight and dimensions.

    For sports equipment exceeding the free baggage allowance the following flat fees per one-way trip apply:

    The EU has prohibited the import of meat and dairy products into the European Community unless they are submitted for veterinary control at a border inspection post – this is to contain the threat of foot and mouth disease and other infectious livestock diseases.
