Baggage


Some general information concerning your baggage:

  • Please mark each piece of baggage clearly with your name and address.
  • We recommend not to include articles like money, jewellery, computers (e.g. laptops, PCs), cameras, negotiable papers, securities, business documents, samples, passports and other identification documents in your checked baggage. Please carry these kinds of articles in your hand luggage. 
  • Your free baggage allowance  is stated on your ticket or on your booking confirmation.
  • For pieces of baggage exceeding the maximum weight of 32 kg and/or maximum total dimensions of 158 cm (length + width + height) special transport conditions are applicable. Examples could be: musical instruments, sports equipment and other excess baggage.

  • Hand luggage / restrictions
  • A single item of hand baggage may not exceed the dimensions 55x40x23 cm and the weight of 8 kg. You can check this using the hand baggage gauge at the airport. Any items above these limits will have to be checked in. Please bear this in mind when packing to ensure that your checked baggage does not exceed the free baggage allowance.

    Here's how much hand luggage you may carry on board:

    Economy Class passengers: 1 item weighing up to 8 kg

    Business Class passengers: 2 items
                                                        -  the first weighing up to 8 kg,
                                                        -  the second up to 4 kg (this may also be a suit bag  
                                                           with max. dimensions of 57x54x15cm). 

    The following items may also be carried free of charge:

    • 1 coat, jacket or blanket
    • 1 umbrella or walking stick
    • 1 handbag or a "slimline" laptop bag
    • 1 small camera or set of binoculars
      Children up to 2 years of age: 1 baby carrier or
                                                            1 child car seat or
                                                            1 fully collapsible stroller  (max. 10 kg)  
       


    Important:
    Depending on the operating aircraft type and/or fulfilling safety requirements of national authorities, in exceptional cases the hand baggage allowance for our Business class passengers may be reduced to 1 piece of hand baggage only.


    Hand luggage restrictions

    Liquids
    Liquids may only be carried on board in a resealable clear plastic bag.

    Please make sure you observe the following rules, otherwise your liquids may be confiscated at the security checkpoint:

    • Liquids, gels and sprays must be held in individual containers not exceeding 100 ml (max. filling quantity as printed on container, not actual contents).
    • The individual containers must be placed in a resealable (e.g. "zip-top") clear plastic bag with max. 1 liter capacity.
    • Only one plastic bag is permitted per passenger.
    • Please present the plastic bag for separate screening at the security checkpoint.

     

    You may also carry the following additional items:

    • baby food
    • special dietary food
    • medicine

     

    Transfer via Vienna

    Are you changing flights in Vienna? The above regulations apply worldwide. More details are available on the Vienna International Airport website.

    Various additional restrictions may also apply, especially for duty free liquids purchased on board or at the airports on the individual legs of your journey.

    The planned simplification for transport of liquids, aerosols and gels carried as hand luggage which should have been effective per 29. April 2011 has been postponed.

    For flights from EU member states, Switzerland, Norway, Iceland, Canada (international airports), Malaysia (KUL), Croatia (DBV, PUY, RJK, SPU, ZAD, ZAG), Singapore (SIN) and international US airports following rules apply:  

    Liquids, gels and aerosols purchased at airport shops or on board must be placed in a sealed, tamper-evident bag clearly labeled with the place and date of purchase. The sealed bag may not be opened until you have cleared security at your final destination.  

    Any liquids, gels and aerosols purchased in other countries as mentioned above, will be confiscated at VIE.  

    Please observe the list of dangerous goods and prohibited items.

  • Free baggage allowance
  • If you purchase a ticket you have a certain free baggage allowance depending on the date of ticket issue, class of service and your routing.

    Your free baggage allowance is calculated either on the basis of weight or piece concept - it is reflected with a maximum weight (number of pieces is not restricted) or with number of pieces( with a maximum weight per piece).

    If you combine an Austrian Airlines flight with those of another carrier, please note that this airline's rules will also apply on Austrian flights if operating the longest or most significant part of the journey.

    Therefore we kindly recommend you to check your free baggage allowance stated on your ticket or on your booking confirmation.          

    Free baggage allowance for tickets as of 15. November 2010  until 31. March 2011

    Free baggage allowance for tickets as of 1. June 2011

    For tickets purchased after 01. June 2011 Austrian Airlines  has simplified the free baggage allowance. For all flights the piece concept is the basis for your free baggage allowance.

    Different free baggage allowances may apply on  charter flights  and on flights operated by code share-partners. 

  • Excess baggage & sport equipment
  • EXCESS BAGGAGE

    In case your baggage exceeds the permitted free baggage allowance, an excess baggage charge will be levied. All fees shown below are for a one-way trip and apply for journeys starting on Austrian Airlines.

    The respective fee is based on the applicable free baggage allowance concept, which is reflected in your ticket or booking confirmation.

    In addition a supplementary Excess Baggage Ticket Service Charge will be levied, the amount depends on the departure airport.

    Please notify us in advance on tel. +43 (0)5 1766 1000 or to specialcases@austrian.com so we can reserve sufficient space, as acceptance is subject to space availability on the aircraft. 

    Different rules and tariffs may be applicable to flights operated by partner airlines (codeshare) or to charter flights. 

    Excess baggage fees - weight concept 

    The fee for 1 kg of excess baggage depends on your route. The countries are assigned to different zones. The respective charges can be found here

    The charge per piece depends on its weight and dimensions.

    SPORTS EQUIPMENT

    Are you travelling with sports equipment? Please notify us in advance via telephone: +43 (0)5 1766 1000 or via e-mail to specialcases@austrian.com,  so we can reserve sufficient space as acceptance depends on space availability in the aircraft compartment.

    1 set of ski- or snowboard equipment per person is free of charge on flights operated by Austrian Airlines provided the ticket is issued before 1. June 2011.

    Beginning with ticket issuance as of 01. June 2011 one set of ski- or snowboard equipment per person is free of charge on all flights operated by Austrian Airlines, except to/from/via USA and Canada.

    Depending on the specific item or its size and dimensions sports equipment is divided into 3 categories:

    • SMALL
    • MEDIUM
    • LARGE

     

    Sports equipment of category "SMALL" is part of your free baggage allowance if its size is within the stated limits.

    Are you a HON-Circle Member or Senator?
    If so, you are granted 1 golf bag free of charge.

    If your baggage includes small sports equipment and exceeds the free bag allowance, or your sports equipment falls into the category "MEDIUM" or "LARGE", the following charges are  applicable:

    Sporting equipment charges for flights departing as of 1. June 2011  

    In addition to this fee a Ticket Service Charge will be levied, the amount depends on the departure airport.

  • Dangerous goods & prohibited articles
  • Dangerous goods

    Dangerous goods are articles or substances which are capable of posing a risk to health, safety, property or the environment.

    Special regulations are applicable for the transport of these goods.


    Do not carry the following dangerous articles in your baggage or on your person:

    • Disabling devices, e.g. mace, pepper sprays or similar containing irritant or incapacitating substances.
    • Elektro shock weapons
    • "Strike anywhere" matches
    • Blue flame or "Cigar"lighters, lighter fuel or lighter refills
    • Liquid oxygen devices
    • Alcoholic beverages exceeding 70 % alcohol by volume
    • Explosives, e.g. fireworks, ammunition with explosive or incendiary projectiles
    • Flammable or spontaneously combustible liquids or solids, e.g. fuel white gas, paint, solvents, alcohol exceeding  80 % by volume, charcoal lighter.
    • Oxidizing material, e.g. stain, bleaches
    • Organic peroxides, e.g. hardener for fiberglass
    • Toxic substances, e.g. pesticides, insecticides
    • Infectious substances, e.g. diagnostic specimens
    • Radioactive material
    • Corrosive material, e.g. Mercury
    • Magnetized material 

     

    The following dangerous goods may be carried under special transport conditions:

    • Aerosols
    • Alcoholic beverages
    • Ammunition
    • Avalanche rescue backpack
    • Battery powered wheelchairs/mobility devices
    • Camping stoves and fuel containers
    • Cardiac pacemaker
    • Cigarette lighters
    • Consumer electronic devices with fuel cell systems or lithium/lithium ion cells or batteries
    • Diving lamps
    • Dry Ice
    • Dry Shipper (Insulated packaging containing refrigerated liquid nitrogen)
    • Energy efficient light bulbs
    • Fuel cell systems
    • Heat producing articles
    • Hair curlers containing hydrocarbon gas
    • Life jacket
    • Lithium ion batteries
    • Matches
    • Medical oxygen
    • Medicinal or toilet articles
    • Mercury thermometer or barometer
    • Non-flammable, non toxic gas cylinders
    • Oxygen or air cylinders for medical use
    • Portable medical electronic devices
    • Radiopharmaceuticals 
    • Security-type equipment such as attaché cases or cash boxes/bags etc.
      incorporating dangerous goods, such as lithium batteries and/or pyrotechnic material

    The European Union defines articles in the Commission Regulation (EC) No 185/2010 of
    04 March 2010, laying down measures for the implementation of the common basic standards on aviation security, which may not be transported in hand baggage or checked baggage:

  • Customs
  • Import of meat, dairy products, etc.:

    The EU has prohibited the import of meat and dairy products into the European Community unless they are submitted for veterinary control at a border inspection post – this is to contain the threat of foot and mouth disease and other infectious livestock diseases.
