Traffic Results for August 2014: Rise in passenger volume despite several crisis areas

The month of August 2014 was impacted by crises in many areas and the related cancellations of flights. For the most part, flight service to Erbil in Iraq had to be stopped for the time being due to the security situation. Nevertheless, the Austrian Airlines Group carried more than 1.1 million passengers in August 2014, comprising a rise of 0.5 percent or more than 85,000 passengers. Accordingly, Austrian Airlines increased passenger volume in spite of the many crisis regions. This can be mainly attributed to the robust growth of its long-haul flights. "We hold up well in a difficult market environment. In August our flight offering to the crisis regions of the Ukraine and the Middle East was adapted substantially. Nevertheless, a rise in passenger volume has come out", explains Karsten Benz, Chief Commercial Officer of Austrian Airlines. "Our North American expansion was the right move." Traffic Results for January to July 2014: Higher Passenger Volume at Austrian Airlines

The Austrian Airlines Group carried about 6.5 million passengers in the period January to July 2014, corresponding to a rise of 1.1 percent from the prior-year level. This increase can be particularly attributed to the additional Boeing 777 which has been in operation since the middle of June 2014 and the strong expansion of flight service to North America. Since July 2, 2014 Austrian Airlines has been offering flights to Newark as a new destination in its route network. Moreover, since July 1, 2014 the airline has been operating a larger aircraft on its daily flights to Washington, namely a Boeing 777 instead of a Boeing 767. Furthermore, in May 2014 the number of flights to Chicago was increased from five to seven per week. As a result, capacity utilization (passenger load factor) in the period January to July 2014 increased by 1.5 percentage points from the previous year to 78.5 percent. Read more here

Austrian Airlines Reduces Profit Forecast for 2014

Austrian Airlines positively concluded the second quarter of 2014 with an operating profit of EUR 10 million. Due to the traditionally weak first quarter, Austrian posted an operating loss of minus EUR 44 million in the first half of 2014 (H1 2013: minus EUR 35 million). The decline of EUR 9 million from the previous year can be mainly attributed to the need to set aside provisions to cover claims arising from the legal dispute on the potential after-effects of the collective wage agreement for flight personnel.
"The legal signals from Luxembourg have led us to allocate provisions for the legal dispute with the Works Council for the flight and cabin crew", says Austrian Airlines CEO Jaan Albrecht. "This negatively impacts our earnings but above all our future plans as well, due to the fact that we have had to stop our investment program to expand the long-haul fleet. The management and Works Council for the flight and cabin crew are once again called upon to find a solution to the conflict." Read the whole press release here

Traffic Results June 2014 - Again more than one million passengers

Austrian Airlines Group carried more than one million passengers again in the month of June 2014, corresponding to a rise of 0.6 percent from the prior-year level. This increase can be particularly attributed to the strong growth of passenger volume on flights to North America. Capacity was increased by 1.8 percent. Revenue passenger kilometers (RPK) were up by 3.7 percent. As a result, capacity utilization (passenger load factor) in June 2014 improved by 1.5 percentage points from the previous year to 80.8 percent.
In the period January to June 2014, Austrian Airlines carried approximately 5.4 million passengers, corresponding to an increase of 1.4 percent year-on-year. "In June we once again carried more passengers. Capacity utilization for flights to North America is reaching record high levels", states Karsten Benz, Chief Commercial Officer of Austrian Airlines. "Austrian is making progress thanks to new products and improved productivity".

First Austrian Airlines Flight to Newark

Starting on July 2, Austrian Airlines is offering a further North American destination in its summer flight schedule. It will fly directly to Newark five times a week with a Boeing 767. Thus Austrian Airlines is offering up to two daily flights to New York in addition to its flight service each day to New York JFK. Austrian Airlines Chief Commercial Officer Karsten Benz personally welcomed the first passengers today and ceremoniously inaugurated the new route to New York.
"With the new offering Austrian Airlines is now flying up to two times per day to the New York metropolitan area. Together with our partner United Airlines we will now be able to offer our passengers more than 120 transfer connections throughout North America in the future", says Austrian Airlines CCO Karsten Benz. "We expect more than 100,000 additional passengers each year as a result of our North American expansion. Newark alone should account for about 50,000 passengers by the end of 2014". Read more

Austrian Airlines Opens Family Check-in for Holiday Season

Just on time to mark the beginning of the holiday season, Austrian Airlines in cooperation with Vienna Airport is opening the first family check-in. Parents can calmly check in while the youngest passengers enjoy themselves in their own children's play area, which is fitted out with red leather dice to build and stack as well as a whole lot of toys. A photo wall with aircraft invites families to take funny snapshots for their holiday album before departure. The Austrian Airlines Family Check-in is located in the Austrian Star Alliance Terminal (Terminal 3). The service is available to families with children up to the age of 12 for all Austrian Airlines flights.
Generally speaking, Austrian Airlines attaches great importance to serving children and families. Each year some 450,000 children up to the age of 12 fly with Austrian Airlines, comprising about four percent of the total number of Austrian Airlines passengers. Naturally, the main focus is the holiday season. In the upcoming holiday months of July and August, more than 165,000 children will once again fly with Austrian Airlines to their holiday destinations. For this reason, Austrian Airlines is making special services and advantages available of which families can take advantage in the upcoming holiday season. Read more

Austrian Airlines Fleet Growth for the First Time in 7 Years

The new long-haul aircraft operated by Austrian Airlines, a Boeing 777-200ER with the registration OE-LPE, took off two weeks earlier than planned at 10:45 a.m. on Monday 16, departing on its maiden flight from Vienna to John F. Kennedy Airport in New York. The latest addition to the Austrian Airlines fleet entails an investment of about EUR 50 million. More than EUR 20 million was required just to refit the aircraft. On balance, each of the 308 high-tech seats on board costs as much as a medium-sized car. The business class seats can be converted into flat beds, and every seat is equipped with a video-on-demand.

However, Austrian Airlines did not only invest money in the aircraft, but the new addition to the fleet is the basis for creating a total of 130 new jobs, including 20 pilots and 90 flight attendants. The management of Austrian Airlines expects this small-scale expansion to result in increased operating revenue of EUR 80 million and 170,000 new passengers on a yearly basis. Moreover, it also enables a new long-haul route, Newark in New Jersey, to be added to the airline's route network starting on July 2, 2014.
"This is the first time in seven years that Austrian Airlines is expanding its fleet", says CEO Jaan Albrecht. "Accordingly, the aircraft which will be baptized with the name Blue Danube by employees on June 27th will serve as a kind of symbol for a fresh start". Read more here

AIRail: Austrian Airlines and ÖBB launch cooperation

From 14 December 2014, Austrian Airlines and ÖBB are to launch a cooperation entitled "AIRail" on the Linz central station - Vienna Airport - Linz central station route. In future, Austrian passengers with an Austrian flight either preceding or following their rail journey will also be able to use new ÖBB connections with an Austrian flight number between Linz central station and Vienna Airport. Integrating Linz into the Austrian Airlines network in this way - in addition to the five daily flights between the two cities already being offered - will provide up to eight extra rail connections a day.
The new train route will become bookable, conveniently in one step together with an Austrian flight, from 2 July 2014 onwards. The travelling time from Linz central station to Vienna Airport will be 1 hour 47 minutes.

"The cooperation with ÖBB is an important step in empowering our passengers by offering them unrestricted mobility, no matter whether it's in the air or on rails. In addition to this, we are connecting Linz even more strongly into the global network of Austrian Airlines, with up to eight rail connections a day", says Jaan Albrecht, CEO of Austrian Airlines. Christian Kern, CEO ÖBB-Holding AG adds: "The connection of train and flight is another step towards modern mobility. Our infrastructure investments generate a direct customer benefit, especially the Vienna Central Station acts as a key to the lock and allows this new connection. As of December 2015, our customers can easily travel by railjet to 'airjet'." Read the whole press release here

Traffic Results May 2014 - More than one million passengers

The Austrian Airlines Group carried more than one million passengers in the month of May 2014, corresponding to a rise of 4.2 percent from the prior-year level. This increase can be particularly attributed to the strong growth of passenger volume on flights to North America. Capacity was increased by 4.1 percent. Revenue passenger kilometers (RPK) were up by 7.9 percent. As a result, capacity utilization (passenger load factor) improved by 2.8 percentage points from the previous year to 78.2 percent.
"The increase in the number of passengers flying with Austrian Airlines shows that what we offer on the market is precisely what is in demand", says Karsten Benz, Chief Commercial Officer of Austrian Airlines. "Particularly business on North American routes still develops favorably. The advance bookings for Newark, which we will add to our route network as of July 2, 2014, have also started off well". On the way to a healthy Austrian

We are continuously increasing our fuel efficiency:
In 2012, our fuel consumption has decreased to 3.98 liters per 100 passenger kilometers from 4.18 liters in the previous year − even though we transported more passengers. The airlines of the Lufthansa Group together produced a value of 4.06 liters per 100 passenger kilometers. This is an efficiency record. Compared to the car, the aircraft is in fact an environmentally-friendly means of transport.

"Fuel is our largest cost driver. If we use less fuel, we reduce costs. At the same time we lower emissions and protect the environment. We cannot influence our fuel consumption entirely. But by implementing specific measures, we can contribute a lot to efficiency. This year our savings goal amounts to 4 million euro. Many divisions throughout the company make an important contribution to this." Oliver Cantele Head of Operations Efficiency Team / DE

Austrian Achieves Operating Result of EUR 25 Million in 2013

• Austrian Airlines returns to profitability after six years
• Strict cost management brings improvement of EUR 31 million
• Jaan Albrecht: "On the right path, but no turnaround yet"

The rigorous restructuring program implemented by the Austrian Airlines Group is clearly reflected in the business results for the year 2013: Austrian Airlines succeeded in posting an operating profit of EUR 25.1 million (2012: loss of EUR 6.0 million on an adjusted basis). In addition to strict cost management, the higher passenger load factor on the aircraft was the main factor contributing to Austrian Airlines’ return to profitability. The successful marketing of intercontinental flights also brought positive results. The year 2007 was the last time Austrian Airlines was in the black.

"Austrian Airlines has put the crisis behind it. We are well on track. Now the priority is to shape our future. This entails the modernization of our medium-haul fleet and expansion of the long-haul fleet", says Jaan Albrecht, Chief Executive Officer of Austrian Airlines.
